Designing for Impact: A UI Perspective
As a UI designer at Oomph, I had the opportunity to work on a project that directly impacted oncology nurses and the institutions supporting them. ONS (Oncology Nursing Society) needed a major digital transformation, three separate websites housed essential resources, but navigating them was a challenge. Nurses in fast-paced clinical settings couldn’t afford to waste time searching for critical information.

Understanding the Users
From the outset, our UX discovery team played a crucial role in uncovering user frustrations.
Through interviews, journey mapping, and usability testing, we identified key pain points:
- Nurses needed quick access to research and clinical tools.
- Healthcare institutions struggled with membership and resource management.
- ONS administrators found content management overly complicated.
This data shaped my UI design approach, ensuring that every interaction point was intuitive and accessible.

Building a Cohesive Visual and Functional Experience
ONS had recently rebranded, but their digital presence didn’t reflect this new identity.
My focus was on translating their updated brand into a seamless web experience while enhancing usability.
To achieve this:
- Conducted style-tile explorations during the discovery phase to align the new brand updates with UI direction early in the process.
- Refined UI components to align with ONS’ new visual identity, ensuring consistency and clarity.
- Developed modern layouts to improve content hierarchy and streamline navigation.
- Prioritized accessibility to meet WCAG compliance, ensuring all users, regardless of ability, could interact with the site effectively.

Enhancing Usability with a Unified System
A fragmented experience meant essential resources were hard to find. Leveraging insights from our discovery phase,
I worked alongside the team to structure a unified design system. Key improvements included:
- Optimized search experience using Algolia, reducing time spent finding critical information.
- Restructured content architecture, making navigation intuitive and reducing cognitive load.
- Integrated scalable UI patterns, ensuring flexibility for future content growth.

The Real-World Impact
The redesigned platform transformed how oncology nurses accessed information. With a streamlined UI, they could now locate clinical tools, research, and resources in seconds rather than minutes. Institutions found membership management far easier, and ONS administrators had a system that was efficient and easy to maintain.
For me, this project reinforced the power of thoughtful UI design. It wasn’t just about making things look good—it was about creating an experience that truly worked for the people who needed it most. Incorporating style-tile explorations early on helped align the visual direction seamlessly with the brand, ensuring a consistent and impactful digital experience. Seeing the real impact of our work in the field of oncology nursing was the ultimate reward.
