As a UI designer, I thrive on the challenge of creating digital experiences that not only engage users but also drive meaningful action. When Rare approached us with a bold idea—building a first-of-its-kind digital marketplace to fund climate-friendly projects—I knew we had an opportunity to make a real impact. Climate change is one of the most pressing global issues of our time, and while individual efforts may seem small, they collectively create powerful change. Our goal was to empower users to take personal action by supporting projects that reduce carbon emissions.
Collaboration lead by Oomph Inc.
A Collaborative Approach to Innovation
With a well-defined strategy in place, we moved swiftly to bring the vision to life. Our team at Oomph facilitated a 20-second “gut check” workshop with Rare to establish a shared design language. We then developed style tiles to refine the aesthetic quickly, ensuring alignment across teams. As we progressed to full-page designs, we collaborated closely with Adapt and Rare, testing an internal API system that populated project data dynamically. This iterative process allowed us to refine the interface in real time, ensuring a seamless user experience.
Bringing this ambitious concept to market in under three months was no small feat, but by combining thoughtful design with agile execution, we helped Rare launch a digital platform that makes it easier than ever for individuals to take meaningful action against climate change.
Designing for Engagement and Trust
Understanding Rare’s audience was key to our approach. Climate-conscious individuals eager to be part of the solution needed an intuitive and inspiring way to contribute. To ensure an engaging user journey, we mapped out each visitor’s experience—curious as they land on the site, inspired as they explore projects, and proud when they make a purchase. Our design choices helped guide them seamlessly through this process:
- We synthesized project data to clearly showcase the cumulative impact of Catch Carbon, building trust and motivating users to take action.
- We streamlined navigation and standardized project descriptions, making it easier for users to find, compare, and support initiatives that resonated with them.
- We introduced user-friendly naming conventions, such as “Collections,” which bundle multiple projects like a mutual fund, allowing contributors to maximize their impact.
